One of the biggest challenges facing any community-build playground project is fundraising. That is why KaBOOM! offers communities occasional grant opportunities to begin or complete playspace projects.
In order to be eligible for the grant, you must meet the following criteria:
Dear Fitness Leader,
Since 1988, I have promoted the effective use of our playgrounds to reinforce the goals of physical education and fitness in general. I have been told by PE teachers that kids gain upper body strength and balance thru fun on the playgrounds I designed. The key is to design with the goal of challenging kids bodies while they are having awesome safe fun.
Many of the playgrounds in your schools or parks today are not designed to challenge kid's bodies. Yes they are fun but don't accomplish the goal of strengthening kid's bodies. Too much sliding or playing with activity panels not enough challenging movement. The classroom is the perfect place to challenge kid's minds. The playground is the perfect place to challenge their bodies.
I am a believer in the need for all opportunities to get kids moving through recess and structured PE classes. Free play is so critical to our kid's emotional, social, and physical development. PE classes, once a daily activity, are too infrequent in my opinion. I congratulate the State of Texas for requiring daily physical movement for all children grades 5 - 12. I hope New Mexico and Arkansas follow with similar requirements.
Playworld Systems, a leader in playground design for 50 years has created the Adventure Series specifically to challenge kid's bodies. The Adventure Series comes with a comprehensive Program Guide (catalog pre-designs only) that offers fun games using the playground equipment as the game environment.
This grant is my small way of helping you reach your organization's fitness goals thru better playgrounds. I hope it gets you started to creating a fit playground for your kids.
